What is mathematics like?

Math is an immportant subject containing Integers , probabilities, fractions, variables, graphing, geometry, problem solving. The reason why math is important is because it's like exercise for your brain, it's like how exercise, you become more healthy.

Math class

All students are required to take math every year. Some math courses are much harder than others, but it allows for better preparation for 11 and 12 level math or even university type math.

Assessment
& Grading

The course is divided into 5 big ideas

1.
The principles and processes underlying operations with numbers applied equally to algebraic situations and can be described and analyzed

2.
Computational fluency and flexibility with numbers extend to operations with rational numbers

3.
Continuous linear relationships can be identified and represented in many connected ways to identify regularities and generalize

4.
Similar shapes have proportional relationships that can be described, measured, and compared.

5.
Analyzing the validity, reliability, and representation of data enables us to compare and interpret

Course outline

Some assessment is part of the learning process and hekos students understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Assessment activities to help students learn may include

Homework
Quizzes
Exit slips
Reflections
and group Discussions

Some assessment occurs after the learning process and shows the student's understanding.
Report card grades and comments are based on the proficiency scale and reflect assessment activities done after learning such as

tests
quizzes
projects and assignments

Pens, Pencils, and erasers

Self explanatory, for writing and erasing.

Highlighters and

Lined paper
Very useful for it's versatility, whether if it's writing, copying an equation down, or writing an essay. It's useful to have some lying around

Calculators

Calculators are essential in mathematics (more commonly used in the later grades) Mainly because doing addition, subtraction etc takes up a lot of time if you manually do it, which is why calculators are useful,

also

don't use the calculators that look like this -->

Instead use a scientific calculator because high school math introduces more concepts that usually wouldn't be found on those basic calculators.

Scientific

Graphing

Supplies

Binder

Also self explanatory, for keeping your math papers

Mickelson Workbook

Not 100% required but is absolutely recommended because it's just practice for you.

if you feel like you're unsure on

a new concept

then you can test out your knowledge with the workbook.

It does not teach you anything and is solely for homework and practicing

*Most of the supplies are usually covered by the School
