LITERTATURE AND WRITING

Literature is like the 3rd step in becoming better at writing, except it's not really necessary when it comes to becoming better at writing

What is literature?
Literature is studying and analyzing sentences, paragraphs, and words along with books, novels, works of writing, and poems. Literature can be divided into 3 main subjects, Poetry, Drama, and Prose.

Poetry

Poetry is like abstract art except if it was words instead of art. It compresses meaning. It divides big ideas into small ideas, using fewer words.

Readers analyze deeper layers of meaning, sound, and visuals.

basic words can convey a powerful meaning through poetry.

Basically. Poetry can express feelings in the reader that other forms of art can't

Drama Plays and scripts is similar to that of poetry. It conveys meaning and emotion through symbolism. Except the main and key difference is that it's performed, not written

Prose

Prose is the most common casual way the author presents their text. There is no poetic devices and stanzas. It is the most straight forward way of writing.

For example: "I've already made plans to go out to visit my sons' play offs'.

Types of poetics devices are

  • Metaphor: Direct comparison WITHOUT using "like" or "as" (for ex. Social media is a drug)

  • Simile: Uses “like” or “as” (For ex. He's as big as the moon)

  • Personification: Giving human traits to non-human things / objects (For ex. The door groaned as it opened)

  • Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration (jokingly) (For ex. I'm so hungry I could eat a horse)

  • Symbolism: Using symbols to create a deeper meaning (For ex. A Rose for love)

  • Alliteration: Repetition of initial consonant sounds (For ex. Which's witch is which?)

  • Assonance: Repetition of vowels (For ex. Rain has me in pain)

  • Onomatopoeia: Words that imitate sounds (For ex. Boom, clank clank clan, plap plap plap).

  • Rhyme: Similar sounding words, not to be confused with assonance (For ex. Leave me with three and thee shall be with glee).

  • Repetition: Repeating words or phrases for emphasis or rhythm. (For ex. Why WHY WHY?!?!?)

  • Stanza: A grouped set of lines, like a paragraph in prose.

  • Imagery: describing words that appeals to the senses, not to be confused with personification (For ex. The cold crisp air)

  • Irony: Saying the opposite of what is meant, often for humor or emphasis.  (For ex. The weather is great outside while it's thundering)

  • Allusion: Reference to another work, person, or event that is usually common knowledge (For ex. he's my romeo to my juliet)

  • Oxymoron: Contradictory terms together (For ex. bittersweet)

Poetics devices are commonly used in literature. They are used to express certain meanings much better, or to add more depth to the work you're making.

Poetic devices are techniques in writing that conveys more emotion, can also be used poetically to convey deeper meaning (e.g. Switching the tone).

Poetic devices are very versatile as they can be applicable to just about anything both visually and verbally
